Brussels, Belgium in one day: Itinerary for first time visitors

Brussels, capital of Belgium, and capital of European Union, is remarkably small, beautiful and easy going city. I was interested to visit Brussels for four important reasons: waffles, chocolate, Mannekin Pis and the grand palace. One day is more or less sufficient to explore the highlights of Belgium.

Here is some important attraction you could cover in one day

1. Grand Palace (Grote Markt)

The Grand Place is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the most important tourist destination and most memorable landmark in Brussels. Most recognizable buildings on the square is town hall, and museum of the city of Brussels. The square is famous because of its unique architecture. It surely dint disappointed me!

2. Manneken Pis

Manneken Pis is the one of the most visited landmark of Brussel. It’s a 61cm bronze statue of a boy peeing. It’s in a 5-minute walk from grand Palace and the most crowdest part of Brussels. There are different tales behind the Manneken Pis, the most famous was; in the 14th century, Brussels was under siege by a foreign power. The city had held its ground for some time, so the attackers conceived of a plan to place explosive charges at the city walls. A little boy named Julianske urinated on the burning fuse and thus saved the city. Knowing these historic facts will certainly make your visit to the Manneken Pis statue more interesting.

3. Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula

The Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula is one of the most important landmarks in Brussels.is a Roman Catholic church in Brussels, Belgium. Although the cathedral was built centuries ago, it was only given the cathedral status in 1962.

4. Royal Gallery of St. Hubert

The gallery included shops, auditoriums, cafes, restaurants and apartments. It’s a beautiful structure! It’s about 100m in length. It’s full of shopping opportunities and worth visiting.

5. Atomium

In my opinion this is one of the best, unavoidable, interesting monument in Brussels and Belgium. The Atomium was constructed for the first post-war universal world exhibition (EXPO 58). The nine spheres represent an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. They represent the faith one had in the power of science especially in nuclear power. These facts attracted me more! There is a entrance to the sphere and the top sphere includes a restaurant which has a panoramic view of Brussels.

Well don’t forget to have mouth watering Waffles. There are lot of street vendors selling these waffles and trust me they are damn! good. You can have different toppings on the top of waffles (ice cream, fruits, chocolates) of your choice.

I am sure you will love your day in Brussels. Let me know your experiences by comment below.
